Culture Bewitched: An Interdisciplinary Transmedia Analysis of Witch/Craft in Society

The proposed volume will focus on witches and witchcraft and the resurgence of interest in Wicca and other forms of witchcraft especially within feminist, LGBTQ+, and environmental social spaces. While the witch is often cast as a villain, especially in horror and gothic films and literature, the witch is substantially more versatile as an archetype and has not been given a thorough enough analysis of the multidimensionality of the character-type. This volume looks to bring together examinations of witches and witchcraft not only from numerous academic positions but also from individuals currently practicing. In this way the editor hopes to draw attention to the appearance of witches and witchcraft in fashion, food, music, positive portrayals, critical theory applications, overlooked history, or in the most recent, and arguably iconic, portrayals of horror and gothic analysis, including new forms of gothic study such as ecogothic, frontier gothic, nonwestern gothic, and so on. Thus, the proposed volume aspires to provide a complete and holistic snapshot of the witch in contemporary culture.

Step 2: Abstracts and CVs due 15 November 2024—abstracts should be 300–500 words and should include author’s name, affiliation, and contact information along with a
current CV.
Step 3: Authors notified of acceptance 15 December 2024
Step 4: Chapter drafts due no later than 1 March 2025; returned with edits ASAP
Step 5: Final chapters due 1 June 2025
Step 6: Book sent for publishing 1 July 2025
