About Profession

Brought to you by the Modern Language Association, Profession offers articles, news, and resources to support the work you do—in a classroom, a library, a writing center, or an office for study abroad. We publish three issues a year; each will include a cluster of articles on a theme as well as other timely essays. We’ll also bring you practical tools, guidelines, calls for papers, grant opportunities, and more.

If you have an idea for a cluster or want to submit an article, please e-mail achang@mla.org. We’re looking for pieces that will interest a broad range of readers and give them ideas and inspiration they can use. Submissions of 1,000 to 4,000 words may be sent as Microsoft Word files and will be reviewed by the editor. Authors must be members of the MLA.

Special issue: The MLA Executive Council is calling for submissions for a special issue of Profession on fighting back against the current climate of hostility on so many of our campuses. Articles could address questions like these: How can we in our teaching and campus work engage deeply with the political and cultural complexities with which our students are wrestling, challenges that are interrelated and overlapping? How can the skills we learn in the study of language, literature, writing, and culture help us unpack and teach the nuances of divisive political questions? What do we do when confronted with contradictory arguments that all have compelling elements? What are effective strategies for dealing with donors who want control in exchange for their money? Deadline for submissions: 15 June 2024

Want to submit a conference announcement, a fellowship, or another opportunity for MLA members? You can use our resource submission form.
