Research and Criticism
Due Date: 03-15-2025
The Department of English at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India, invites submissions for the upcoming special issue of its journal Research and Criticism on Literature and the Environment.
Environmental humanities is an interdisciplinary branch of knowledge that engages with a wide range of areas to address the issues relating to climate crisis. This discipline is growing at a fast pace. Various independent centers and departments are being established at universities across the world to promote research in this field. Literary studies with its multifold perspectives have actively been involved with this discipline. Keeping in view an increasing array of literatures in various languages relating to environment and ecology, this special issue invites submissions that attempt to explore how literature helps us understand human relationships to the environment, nature, places, animals, weather events, and the planet at large. We encourage contributors to analyze literary texts, situate them in context, and discuss and interpret them using philosophical and critical approaches such as new materialism, ecofeminism, critical animal studies, and ecocriticism, among others. Our goal is also to highlight contemporary environmental issues, exploring the role of literature in addressing our current ecological crisis, especially in relation to climate change and environmental justice, while reflecting on our preconceptions about our relationship with the nonhuman world.
We welcome original contributions in the form of critical essays and book reviews on Literature and the Environment that have not been published elsewhere. All submitted papers will undergo an anonymous peer-review process by independent reviewers, and the results will be communicated to the authors within one month.
