William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan Research Fellowships

The William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan welcomes applications for 2026–27 research fellowships. The Clements’ holdings—books, manuscripts, pamphlets, maps, prints and views, newspapers, photographs, ephemera—are among the best in the world on almost any aspect of the American experience from 1492 through 1900, and support a diverse array of research projects.

Along with the fellowships awarded in previous years, the Clements Library would like to highlight two recently added fellowships. The Charles R. Eisendrath Fellowship in Early American Journalism is a short-term fellowship supporting research projects that explore the relation of journalism to US history before 1900 in both pictorial and written reportage and commentary. The Foreman Band History Fellowship supports research in the Clements Library’s growing collection of materials related to bands, band music, band leaders, and brass musicians from the 1830s into the early twentieth century. The collection offers outstanding resources for the study of both the performance and business of band music, and of American popular culture more broadly.

As in previous years, many projects with topics related to the United States and the Caribbean and/or Atlantic World in the eighteenth to twentieth centuries will find rich resources in the library’s collections. Other strengths of the collections include Native American history and culture, ephemera, African American history and culture, the history of science, health, technology, and medicine, material culture, the history of cartography, graphics and visual art, disability studies, and more.

The Clements offers long-term (four months), short-term (one month), and week-long fellowships, as well as a digital fellowship with no residency requirement. Applications are due by 15 January 2026 for research to be undertaken between 1 June 2026 and 31 May 2027.
